I wonder if my communication and social skills had been getting worst recently. Not sure if it's because as you grow older, you get lazier, more anti-social and simply do not bother as much to seek for social acceptance. Hmm, this is really no good... Three examples:
1. Catch up with sis and asked about their trip after the family was back from a vacation. Our chitchat overheard by nephew was interpretated wrongly and innocently communicated to the people whose names we had mentioned. A misunderstanding was created and sis asked if she should ask nephew to go clarify since she can always vouch for me and the younger one can verify that he was there and had not heard me say that. It was too much hassle and my nephew was just a little kid. Indeed, the poor boy was already feeling very guilty after my sis and bil had a session with him on the seriousness of passing on information without verification and creating miscommunication, as well as why it is not appropriate to share family conversations, verified or not, to outsiders.
Besides, i did not want to make the persons involved to be embarrassed by bringing up the story about them. Didn't think it was a big deal.. and i thought "清者自清"...and anyway, it had already happened and clarifying will just " 越描越黑"... but perhaps i was wrong... for i just realized that i have created others' misunderstanding of me...
2. While overseas, found myself in a social setting (a circle i was not too close with) after i was involved in an event while my closer contacts who didn't have any responsibility over the event "siam" and went out to have fun. Anyway, so i joined this circle for some drinks and conversations turned into gossips, which included names i know, none from my inner cicle but one whom had been quite nice to me on the few occasions we interacted. So anyway, there i sat there and listened to them talk. At first, it sounded interesting. Then i thought to myself... this is so scary... the person being talked about could well be me, or anyone there on the lounge that day, if we had happened not to be there in person that day. And as i sat looking at the person sharing the tibits of gossips, i felt nauseated..
3. I had been flying kites.. for the wrong reason. Over Christmas period, i stood a friend up because i thought catching up with him alone would create more misunderstanding between me and this lady friend of his (ok, and mine too, before she acted weird and confusing and most importantly picked on me for no reason or explanation).
So anyway, i think my friendship with him was an issue for her (although she told me she wished he'll leave her alone..but anyway, that's between them) so i decided in the end, albeit feeling really bad about it, to tell him that i could not make it for the appointment. Although the reason i gave for not being able to make it was totally legitimate and factual, i could have arranged to meet up on another time or day if i had indeed been sincere. Actually, i should have just tell him straight my concerns for not wanting to meet. I'm sure he would understand..
From my recent experiences, i have come to three conclusions.
One, where there are people, there will be gossips and 是非.
Two, everyone loves gossip, provided that it is not on them. An untrained mind is one which receives information without verification. A gossip is one who spread negative information about others. An energizer is one who spread positive news about others. I shall strive to be the energizer! :)
Three, I do have a tendency to avoid conversations that are uncomfortable or awkward. I must really try to be conscious of this and make an effort to confront this weakness.
je ne sais quoi, i know you have a special something, je ne sais quoi, something I just can’t explain

Little things :)
- While at work this afternoon, nephew called to tell me that he had excavated the complete T-Rex skeleton from the archaeological kit i got for him. :) It was a quick phone chat but it brought a sunshiny break to a quiet day at work. :)
- It was raining when i left office earlier and i kindda like that feeling. The air was chill, the night was quiet and you can hear the rain softly falling onto the ground.. What a nice peaceful mood.. no clutters..bliss. :)
- And JS msn me to check my emails just now before she went to bed. Choices for our Christmas gathering to choose from. So nice and comes with restaurant background links. We only need to decide. hee. :p.

Happy
Happy is when your ex teammates ask you to come back to lead the team and they will fully support you in the role. :)
It feels good even when you are not at all keen. :)

平安就是幸福
My colleague announced to everyone during his hole-in-one dinner treat this evening of the amount i have donated to our company employee Japan Tsunami Relief fund (the company had donated an amount separately) which just started yesterday. It was the highest among the collection so far. I was a little paiseh when asked to say something. I had actually prepared the cheques (my mother and mine )since 2 weeks ago for Singapore Red Cross but had been kept busy i always ended up postponing to the next day. So when the initiative and request came, i conveniently passed my cheques which had been sitting in my handbag to our department secretary.
So i was asked if i have a boyfriend or relative in Japan or if i had any reason for the donation amount. I said cos i don't have a million dollar (like the rich girl in the newspaper headline) so i donated this amt which i am comfortable with. Actually, I just feel very sorry for the people of Japan and the state of destruction they have to witness and go through and live with. We are truly very fortunate not having to go through such disasters.. Really, 平安就是幸福..
And when you think about all the problems we face in our daily life, work stress, relationship problems, money problems etc, they all pale and seem so minute against the life and death disasters this nation has to go through.
I hope everyone can live in a peaceful world.

My 小红
A colleague commented recently that it's time i switch to a new car. " Buy a bigger nicer car.. and no red color..." he offered his well intended advice. "Thanks for the advice, but no thanks..", i countered.
I think my little red car has served me well for the past 5-6 years. It's really 麻雀虽小, 五脏俱全. For me, the purpose of a car is to transport me from point A to point B. I don't need help from the size and make of a car to tell the world how successful i am (not to mean that i am so successful though) or feed my ego further. Nor am i someone who is passionate about cars and will appreciate all the outstanding performance etc of a good car. My colleagues occasional lunch-time conversations on cars does still confuses me! haha!
But i love my 小红. It went through many ups and downs with me. It was an impromptu purchase..but nevertheless a purchase i have never regretted. It accompanied me through the period when i just returned Singapore from Europe, trying to start my life afresh, trying to move on with my life, healing a broken heart while having to smile hard at the world and pretended that i was happy.
It was a transition from times in the past when i was without car and enjoyed privileges of ex or friends with cars coming to fetch me to a time of empowerment. Of being independent, and free and alone..
It was with me during the few occasions when despite myself, the tears would drop as i drove myself home and i was grateful that no one was around...just me in my little red car. Times when i just sat with myself inside the car, not knowing where to go. It was there during times when i was dating hard (or trying to date hard), thinking that that was the best way to stop loving someone...
It was there too during the numerous happy times when i engaged in happy activities with my friends. Happy drives chatting with friends and driving towards activities i enjoyed that keep my life active and fulfilled. Funny adventures and mishaps i encountered, and the many traffic offences and stories i made along the way too. It was there too, at times when i suddenly have some bright enlightened thoughts while i was on the wheels. :)
These past few years had been a healing, growing and transformative period for me. I feel wiser, more contented and generally happier... and my 小红 had been there through it all, like a loyal steadfast friend..

Quote to Remind Myself
Came across this quote from Marilyn Monroe while searching for something else. I think this is a good reminder to me so i shall give it the honor of appearance here. :)
"I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together."
— Marilyn Monroe

Kranji Countryside outing with the Kids
Went to the Kranji Countryside with the children from Kidsread program on sat. It was quite an interesting visit and reminds me of my kampong days when we used to live so close to nature. Anyway, the Kranji countryside was supposed to have been named the world's first and best LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) region. Do check it out for something different to do in Singapore. :)

Bed Bugs Attack !
Came back from Borobudur with a body full of bed bug bites. My friend who shared the room with me got the bites on the first day but i did not get any symptom. The second night though was horrible and i woke up with many bites. The itchiness and unsightly bumps from the bites really bugged me and it got worst this morning i had to go and see a doc to get a jab to stop the itchiness. How i hate bed bugs!!
On the flight back, my friend had nothing to do and took some photos of the bites.
Here's a link to some recommendation on how to get rid of bed bugs and treat the bites. And there's another nice article on how to treat bed bugs bites and getting rid of the bugs. On the bites, it says that
" ...the bites prove to be very itchy to many that get them, but recent studies show that many people are not allergic to the bites and will not feel any discomfort. That being said, many may have bed bugs and not even know about it. The bites itch because of a numbing agent the bugs use to keep you from feeling the bites, this agent causes an allergic reaction for many. These bites are not life threatening, but are not fun to have. The best remedy is to use a topical antihistamine such as calamine lotion or Aveeno followed by some Benadryl taken orally. Bathing is Epson salts have been seen by many to help soothe the itchiness. The important thing is to try and not scratch the bites as this will only make them worse and could lead to scaring.
The itchiness and redness will go away on it’s own within a few days and they do not carry any diseases, so these is little to worry about. "
I guess at least it's consoling to know that the itchiness and redness will go away on it's own within a few days.
Dun let the bed bugs bite!
On the flight back, my friend had nothing to do and took some photos of the bites.
My little finger which was swollen. More bites surface on this finger later that day and the finger swelled even more.
Near the neck. There are worst pics but i shall spare the readers from the awful sights.
I googled a little on bed bug bites and found some interesting information.

Take a Break
What do you when things seems to be getting out of hand?
That you only have this limited amount of time but everyone and everything seems to want a piece of you.
These days, i'll just deliberately slow things down.
People and all sort of daily demands just have to take their queue number.
Sometimes, i'll drive somewhere just to be alone and to take a breather. Other times, i'll turned my phone to silent mode so that i can get some real work done. And occasionally, i'll just write down my thoughts.
The other day i checked, 40 over phone calls a day and people screamed frustrations that they can't get me? Sorry, but i'm not a call center. I'll try my best but meanwhile, you just gotta take your queue. How can i get anything done if i don't pull the plug and manage all these craziness?
I read that multi tasking really undermines our efficiency. My experience tells me it's true. And studies proved it's true. Here's an interesting extract from the article Is multi-tasking bad for your brain? Experts reveal the hidden perils of juggling too many jobs to share here.
Not only does multi-tasking affect our mental clarity, switching between tasks also makes us less efficient.
An American study reported in the Journal Of Experimental Psychology found that it took students far longer to solve complicated maths problems when they had to switch to other tasks - in fact, they were up to 40 per cent slower.
The same study also found multitasking has a negative physical effect, prompting the release of stress hormones and adrenaline.
This can trigger a vicious cycle, where we work hard at multi-tasking, take longer to get things done, then feel stressed, harried and compelled to multi-task more.
Studies by Gloria Mark, an ‘interruption scientist’ at the University of California, show that when people are frequently diverted from one task to another, they work faster, but produce less. After 20 minutes of interrupted performance, people report significantly higher stress levels, frustration, workload, effort and pressure. ..."
So, this says it all. Don't be worried if you can't do many things at one time. And dun try too hard or panic about it. It's not realistic to begin with. You are doing fine. :)

Running - My New Found Interest
I picked up running about 2 months ago. It was due to a mix of influence from a good friend, a wake up call after a medical checkup that informed me that i have high cholesterol level and an unflattering photo a friend posted on facebook which was a rude reminder to me that i have put on weight and needs to start keeping lean.
I thought running would be a great choice as i can do it anytime. I do rollerblading every other weekend with my friends but it was not enough. Tennis was also out as i was still recovering from an arm injury.
So i got a new pair of running shoes, a gift :), and kickstarted my new sport. To make sure i keep the momentum to run at least once a week for the start, i told my friends about my sad situation (high cholestrol level!) and my new ambition, hehe, and make plans to go run together. My idea was, if i made appointments to do the runs, i couldn't back out like if i were to go alone.
So far, it has been great. I have ran at the Botanical garden, Hortpark, Bishan park, Ponggol park and around my housing estate. For the last two, it will be when i run alone. Actually, i rather enjoy running alone. I can run at my own pace and set my own targets. And i enjoy thinking of things or not thinking of anything when i run. It helps to clear my mind. And with my ipod to accompany me, it has been perfect! :)
But running with friends helps fix the regularity and routine for the run. (at times, when i planned to go myself for a run afterwork, i found myself skipping the plan when things gets too busy at work, and things are always busy at work for me) And it is nice to chat, relax or have breakfast together(on weekend runs) with my friends after the workout.
It has been slightly less than two months since i have started running. I am quite pleased with myself as i have consistently run at least twice a week. :). I received comments from some friends that i seemed to have slimmed down. I'm not sure if this has been due to the runs since i've only started recently, or if it was due to my smart dressing to hide my fats, but definitely, i feel much better. I like the feeling at the end of each run when i'd be all sweatly. It feels really great. I like to imagine that i have expelled that much of toxins out from my body each time.
And i downloaded a cool running application to participate in my new interest. I don't use the application often but still it's quite a cool application that allows you to track your running actitives. Here's a snapshot of my running route earlier this week through the RunKeep iphone application. :)
With my new interest, i start to read more about the sports on the internet. I rather like Runner's World, they have very interesting, informative and inspiring articles. I especially like the section under Runner's Stories. Each story is an inspiration...
And recently, i have signed up for the addias Sundown Marathon 2010. Since i'm a beginner, i shall not be ambitious and signed up for the 10Km run. Managed to persuade a non runner friend and two others to sign up together. Now my non runner friend has to go for morning runs with us every saturaday morning. hehe.
I'm actually quite looking forward to the run.

How to get through Life
Someone forward this to me. The babies are all so cute! :)
How To Get Through Life
Sleep as much as you can ...
Read books that you enjoy...
Play with simple things...
Do whatever you want --whenever you want...
Look for affection when you need it...
Get serious once in a while...
Forget about diets....
Show some affection...
Get angry once in a while....
Change your looks...
Above all, be happy,
regardless of what
your challenges may be...
Have a great life!
May your troubles be less, your blessings more,
and may nothing but happiness
come through your door.

Would you be tempted to find out more? I think a lot of people will. I am not totally immune as well. Even if the possibility is low, and one questions if it's for real, it presents some kind of hope. Like lottery, 4 Ds, totos, lucky draws. It just needs to be real/come true once, just once...
I never win any 4D or totos in my entire life yet, but sometimes, when there's the occasional inspiration, i still do give the lottery a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th....100th.... chance. heehee.
I guess deep down, we are all suckers for anything that promises some kind of hope and possibility, even if remotely possible. :)

A Happy Customer of Amazon.com
I came home today and was greeted with a pleasant surprise. The book i bought online from amazon.com has arrived! :)
I have chosen the shipment mode via standard international shipping, i.e the cheapest rate and noted that the estimated delivery date will be 5th August. It's a little long but i'm ok to wait. And little did i expect, in less than 2 weeks, July 1st, it has arrived! I'm really happy. There's wisdom in under promising and over delivering.
This is not the first time i make purchase with amazon and the experience has always been good and i'll be back for more!
